Kyoto - Sagano Romantic Train: Arashiyama & Bamboo Groves

The Sagano Scenic Railway (嵯峨野観光鉄道), also known as the "Romantic Train" or "Sagano Torokko" is a train that runs through Arashima and Kameoka. You can take the 25 minute journey to enjoy the views of the Hozugawa River.

The ticket can be bought at the Kameoka Torokko Station for 620 yen. I enjoyed my breakfast near the station. It was a beef cutlet sandwich (450 yen) from Sizuka and coffee.

During the journey, we encountered people rafting down the river. Before the opening of the JR Sanin line in 1895, transporting timber, grain, firewood and charcoal by boat was a thriving business. Rafting logs has now become a tourist attraction for those visiting Arashiyama.

The creatures found in the stations are raccoon dogs (also known as "Tanuki"). In Japanese folklore, Tanuki have shape shifting powers and are mischievous. Today, they are creatures that brings prosperity and business success.

Finally we've arrived at the Arasiyama Station.

The Mikami Shrine (御髪神社) is the only shrine that honors hair in Japan. It is a very small shrine near the JR Arasiyama Station. My mum was a bit conscious of thinning hair, so we paid a visit...

Inside, there were amulets in the form of a tiny comb. So cute!

We continued our journey to the bamboo groves. I would say it's a bit overrated. However, walking among the bamboo grove road is quite pleasant in the summer.

And there's yet another shrine.

The scenery after you've crossed the "Moon Crossing Bridge".

The Sagano Scenic Railway is a good way to spend a morning in Kyoto, especially during the spring and autumn season. It can be quite hot to walk around in the summer.
