Seoul - Ewha Woman's University

The Ewha Woman's University has quickly became one of the most visited destinations in Seoul. Its architecture was the special work of French architect Dominique Perrault.  The glass curtains on both sides of the campus created a "valley", leading to a stairway towards the campus centre.

1. Ewha Woman's University Campus

Ewha Woman's University is a private university founded in 1886 by the American Christian missionary Mary Scranton. It was named by King Kojong in 1887. Ewha Woman's University is the world's largest female educational institute.

2. The Pear Flower Decoration Wall

Ewha means Pear Blossoms. The name is likely to came from the grove of pear trees nearby. One of the "must do" for visitors is to take a photo in front of the pear blossoms in white porcelain!

3. Ewha Womans University Fashion Street

Don't forget to visit the Ewha Womans University Fashion Street! You'll find stalls and shops selling fashion items, accessories, cosmetics and shoes. Clothes range from 5,000 to 10,000 won - much less than those in Dongdaemun and Myeongdong. Besides, in some shops you can try the clothes on at a fitting room. Try before you buy!

4. Exotic Version: Greek food at Gyros

We had takeaway at Gyros. We were looking for non-spicy food because of stomach pain.

Gyros is the name of a Greek dish: meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie. The meat, usually pork, chicken, beef or lamb is wrapped in flatbread with red onion, tomatoes, shredded lettuce and tzatziki sauce. For lunch we ordered a set with spanakopita, souvlaki, salad and drinks.

Spanakopita is Greek Spinach pie, filled with chopped spinach, feta cheese and onions.

Lamb souvlaki consists of small pieces of lamb on a skewer, served with sauce and rice.

The food is not particularly outstanding for value. It's an alternative for those who want something other than Korean food. They have an English menu.

5. Budget Version: the 6,000 won Korean Set Meal

A Korean friend introduced me to this restaurant. It is located on a slope near the Ewha Woman's University campus. The basic set meal (for 1 person) is only 6,000 won and it include:
  • Stir fried spicy squid/chicken/pork (choose one, or a combination of any two)
  • Korean steamed egg
  • Fried rice

You can order it extra hot. For an extra 1,000 won or so, you can add cheese and rice cake to your spicy stir fry. Yummy!

Go to the 2nd floor. It's less crowded at around 2-3 pm.

6. Beansbins Dessert

If you're craving for some dessert, Beansbins coffee is famous for their mango waffles. In summer, they have strawberry waffles.
