Hokkaido is famous for its dairy products, in particular, butter and milk. The dessert in Sapporo are delicious. Here are some of the desserts and cake shops that are worth trying near JR Sapporo.

1. Rokkatei Butter Cream Sandwich (マルセイバターサンド)

The main ingredients include Hokkaido butter and rum infused raisins. This buttery rum-infused biscuit is delicious. I would recommend this to everyone visiting Hokkaido for the first time. You're likely to enjoy this dessert is you like Scottish fingers and creamy food.

The Rokkatei head office is just 3 minutes away from the JR Sapporo Station on foot. Nevertheless, this dessert is available in many department stores and local shops in Hokkaido.

2. Kinotoya (きのとや)

Kinotoya is the place to purchase baked cheese tart. Located near JR Sapporo Station (East Entrance), you are likely to discover freshly baked cheese tart straight from the oven. It is voted as one of the best bakeries in Sapporo.

I've tried one of their famous baked tarts. It is rich and creamy. The tart tastes better when hot.

3. Fruitcake Factory

This cake shop is located at the JR Station Shopping Mall at Sapporo. I was a little skeptical at first given the price of this fruit cake.

Having tried Quil Fait Bon from Osaka before, I have to say Quil Fait Bon was more impressive in terms of the sweetness of the fruit and the taste of custard. Nevertheless, if you're craving for something more fruity and less creamy, Fruitcake factory can satisfy your sweet tooth.

4. LeTAO (ルタオ)

Le TAO is best known for its Double Fromage Cheese Cake. You can find Le Tao at Daimaru Sapporo and it is directly connected to the Sapporo Station. Currently it is the only store in Sapporo. The flagship store is located in Otaru, Hokkaido.

I was told that this cheesecake is a must try in Hokkaido. It is worth trying for the hype. If you like creaminess and different kind of cheese, this could be the dessert for you.

6. Romantei

I was recommended this cake store by a mutual friend before going traveling to Sapporo. Accordingly, Chocolate Mont Blanc is their signature product. The takeaway store is located at B1F, ESTA near JR Tower.

You'll find a concoction of sponge cake, whipped cream and ganache in the Chocolate Mont Blanc. If you crave chocolate, this is the dessert for you. Personally, I like this dessert because I'm a big fan of chocolate. The cake itself is not too creamy or too sweet.

7. Royce Chocolate Potato Chips

Royce Chocolate Potato Chips is one of my favorite gift to family and friends whenever I visit Japan. It is basically Hokkaido potato chips dipped in chocolate.

There are several flavors available but I always prefer the mild bitter one. It is less sweet and it brings our the saltiness of the potato chips. Usually they can last for several days in the fridge after opening.

You can find the Royce counter at B1F of the Sapporo Daimaru shop. As a last minute gift before leaving Japan, it can be found in 2F of and 3F of the New Chitose Airport.

8. Royce Nama Chocolate

Not to say I'm a big fan of Royce, but there are always new flavors of this chocolate every time I went to Japan. So far I've tried Champagne Pierre Mignon and Bitter Flavor (with Hennessy V.S.O.P.). The soft chocolate taste great with liquor as it melts in your mouth.

This time I came across a limited edition of "Orange and Mango" during my trip to Sapporo. I prefer dark chocolate with liquor more. If you like tropical fruits and the taste of milk chocolate, this is a nice product to keep your eyes on when you're at a Royce counter next time. Refrigeration is necessary.

9. Rokkatei Strawberry Chocolate (White)

Another popular choice at Rokketai is strawberry chocolate. Ripe, freeze dried strawberries covered in either white chocolate or milk chocolate. If you prefer a sweeter option, white chocolate is a good choice.

If you're tight on budget, try purchasing the strawberry chocolate sold at Muji, which is similar in taste but lower in price.

You're likely to enjoy this dessert if you like the taste of condensed milk and crunchiness of freeze dried fruit. There is also a milk chocolate option available in green. However, the white chocolate one looks prettier in terms of gift.

I would purchase this along with the Butter Cream Sandwich.
